Rebels in the News
Cool at School: Travis Rebels honor cancer patients and women by Chris Saldaña The Travis High School football team takes time off the field to make sure the woman in their lives, and some they may never meet know they're worth. Before sunrise, on some mornings in the darkness, you can find the Rebels running drills, and practicing for Friday night games. But off the field, it’s the game of life head football coach Joe Frank Martinez preps them for, "This is real life. It's not a game, it's more important than football." A play you won't find in the play books is perhaps one that scores the most points for so many. A few years ago, for the month of October, Martinez required athletes in this program, write a letter to someone battling breast or women who have impacted their lives. Sophomore Darian McFerrin wrote his letter to his grandmother, "She's a tough woman and I have always looked up to her. I thought it was good that we are acknowledging women and breast cancer, and given some time to write about them, and let them know how we feel," he said. Junior David Rodriguez wrote two letters, one to his grandma and the other to his mom, "When I give em a letter I can see it in their face, they're grateful. She's always there for me and my siblings and that's an inspiration to me," he said. Inspiring athletes is something Coach Martinez set to do years ago with this project, never imagining his own sister would be diagnosed with breast cancer, "We are seeing it live and in living color in my home, and that's tough to see your little sister go through that," he said. Student athletes learning to become expressive men is what makes the football team of Travis High School cool at school. cbsaustin.com/news/local/cool-at-school-travie-rebels-honor-cancer-patients-and-women COUNSELOR CHAT

Travis ECHS Vertical Team - Staff Development/Student Holidays
Austin ISD is designated as a Texas Education Agency District of Innovation (DOI), which allows AISD schools to adjust their schedules and calendars to meet the needs of the school community. AISD was recently granted District of Innovation Status from TEA, which allows campuses one option of requesting changes to the school calendar to increase teacher staff development and planning time during the school year. We submitted our plan to become a DOI Vertical Team and were approved to begin this plan for the 2017-2018 School Year.
We will be adding four additional Professional Development Days to the 2017-2018 School Calendar for the Travis ECHS Vertical Team Schools.
These dates are:
Friday, September 29
Monday, December 18
Tuesday, December 19
Wednesday, January 3
Students will not attend school on the above dates.
The cafeteria will be open on these days.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for students.
Staff must still report to campus for professional development.
Please contact your student's campus for more information.
